Exploring the Northwest and beyond wouldn't be possible without the help of these amazing adventure equipment companies. Please visit their websites and support our partners in adventure and exploration.
(Links below will lead to either the manufacturer's website or Northridge4x4.com, our retail partner's site.)
If you own a newer Jeep and are like us, you have shopped for aftermarket parts and accessories, then you probably have heard of Northridge4x4. Northridge4x4 offers OE and aftermarket parts and accessories for Jeep Wranglers, Gladiators, and even the new Ford Bronco
Are you looking for the next piece of overland gear for your kit? Check out TrailRecon, the overland gear sister site of Northridge4x4. On TrailRecon.com you will find just about everything and anything to make camping and exploring the backroads more comfortable.
What's one of the most important pieces of gear when overlanding for multiple days? Shelter... especially here in the northwest. South African based Alu-Cab manufactures campers, canopy campers, awnings and a multitude of overland accessories. Their camper systems are manufactured out of aluminum and designed for the rugged off-road enviroments that we love to explore and currently available for the most popular North American applications.
If you have been a fan of overland travel for any amount of time, you probably have heard of ARB 4x4 Accessories, the world's largest 4x4 Accessories manufacturer. ARB is the leader in in engineering, basically everything needed to outfit a vehicle for global expeditions.
We have been a fan of ARB for several years and currently use their front bumper, rock sliders, fridge freezer, air compressor and Air Lockers in our Gladiator.
When building a vehicle for overland travel, a quality set of tires are a must. Most new vehicles come with subpar tires that may have a name brand on the sidewall, but also had meet a budget cost criteria to check the box from the accounting department. Meaning, a proper reliable tire upgrade is a must to handle different kinds of terrain that we explore.
We have been a fan of Nitto tires and have been super happy with the new Recon Grappler A/T (16k miles as of Dec 2022). The Gladiator has been in all conditions except for deep mud and can honestly report that we are impressed.
Since 1997 American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) has become the world’s premier supplier of OE-quality, performance-driven aftermarket parts, and accessories for vehicles geared specifically to off-road recreational driving and overland adventure travel. Focusing mainly on the Jeep and Ram platforms, AEV off parts and accessories and full turnkey vehicle build ready for a weekend or year-long overland expedition.
We have been a fan of the AEV quality for years and currently run their 3" DualSport RT suspension system with the high capacity diesel coil springs. Upgrading the suspension was a necessity for the added weight of the camper system and in our opinion, AEV nailed it.
Goose Gear is the leader in vehicle storage solutions. Since it's just two of us and a small dog, the back seats weren't required in the Gladiator. The solution? Goose Gear offers rear seat deletes for the most popular overlanding platforms. In the Gladiators case, we replaced both rear seats with the higher platform model to utilize the storage capacity that the delete offers. And while doing so, we even shed some weight (the factory seats are fairly heavy).
Installing the seat deletes also created a platform for mounting our 73QT ARB ZERO Fridge Freezer. And lastly, the Goose Gear seat delete creates a protected compartment for mounting an ARB twin air compressor.
When it comes to packing clothes, blankets, or other soft goods like down jackets, there is no better way to pack them than in a soft bag. In a soft bag, you can more easily stuff the bag in cramped areas that you couldn't with a rigid style storage system.
We've had the opportunity to test and photograph a new Seattle-designed and manufactured bag over the summer and are super impressed. Made from kevlar sailcloth, YKK zippers, and sewn to meet military specs, the Bubba Goose Design bags will last a long time, if not a lifetime.
Not only are two-way radios great to have when exploring with friends, but can also come in handy in emergencies. Long gone are the days of the short range of a CB radio which have been replaced with GMRS and VHF. We are a fan of the Midland product line and impeccable customer service. For communications, we are currently running the Midland MXT575 for maximum distance in the smallest package offered and have a set of the Midland X-Talker handhelds for friends to borrow on the trail or when we need to be out of the vehicle spotting.
If you need a quality solution to manage more than one battery, then REDARC is the way to go. When planning our Jeep Gladiator camper build, we knew we would want a lithium battery as a house battery and hard-mounted solar panels on the camper roof. REDARC offers native systems that not only work with the smart, variable voltage charging system on the Gladiator but also incorporate inputs for solar.
We chose the REDARC BCDC 40 Amp system to charge our 200 AH lithium battery and haven't looked back. In addition, REDARC offers inverters, solar blankets, and tow brake controllers along with numerous related accessories.
We spend a lot of time in the driver's or passenger's seat. If your seat isn't properly angled for our body types, long drives can be uncomfortable. A company called Desert Does It has come up with a solution to help. Available for most popular applications, Desert Does It offers a product called a 'seat jacker' that adjusts the angle of the seat base making it more comfortable than the factory.
A proper brake upgrade should be included in any build plan that involves larger tires and added weight. Well, our Gladiator is defiantly heavier and we are running 37" in tires so an upgrade was needed. While researching available upgrades on the market, we discovered Powerbrake out of South Africa. Not well known in the USA, Powerbrake is popular in the Dakar Rally world and are adding USA application frequently. With the Gladiator kit, you get a new 6-piston caliper and a larger diameter and thickness rotor. The results? So much better and more responsive than the factory, spongy front brakes.
Glazer's Camera is the Northwest's premier source for photo and video equipment and supplies. For the past 10+ years Glazers and been our number-one source for camera gear. And on photographic or video shoots that we needed specialized gear, their large catalog of rental equipment was there for our pickings. If you are located in the Seattle-Tacoma area, stop in their retail store in Seattle. It's like a candy store for photographers. If you are not local, please visit their website and support our photography equipment partner.
